You may experience the 'Backend Error' in Darktide if there is application on your PC, commonly Anti-Virus or Firewall, interfering with the connection to our servers. This is most common for Kaspersky and Norton users.

Add Anti-Virus & Firewall Exceptions
Please ensure the appropriate Anti-Virus and Firewall exceptions are in place for Darktide.
Darktide.exe: Steam\steamapps\common\Warhammer 40,000 DARKTIDE\binaries

Disable Background Applications
A 'Selective Startup' ensures nothing other than the essential services are running on your PC, and can help identify whether an application running on your PC is interfering with your connection to Darktide.
- Press the Windows key
- Type 'msconfig' and select 'System Configuration'
- On the 'General' tab, select 'Selective Startup'
- Deselect 'Load startup Items'
- Reboot your PC
If the error no longer occurs after having performed the Selective Startup, try re-introducing your programs one-by-one to determine which is causing your issue.
[Microsoft Store] Xbox App & Microsoft Store App Accounts
This error can occur if separate accounts are used on the Xbox App, and Microsoft Store App.
Please make sure you are logged in to the same account as your Xbox App on the Microsoft Store App.
[Steam] Delete Darktide AppData & Verify Integrity of Game Files
NOTE: This will reset any custom keybindings.
- Press the Windows key + R
- Enter %appdata% within the search input and select 'OK'
- Navigate to: AppData\Roaming\Fatshark
- Delete the entire 'Darktide' directory
You will then need to use the 'Verify Integrity of Game Files' option, which is accessible via the Steam client and will ensure the installation is complete.
- Right-click Darktide in your Steam library sidebar
- Select 'Properties'
- Select the 'Local Files' tab
- Select the 'Verify Integrity of Game Files' button
- When complete, close and reopen Steam
NOTE: If Steam Cloud saving is enabled for Darktide, this may automatically restore the AppData and consequently cause the error to resurface. You can disable Steam Cloud Saving for Darktide via the Steam client by:
- Navigate to your Steam library
- Right-click Darktide
- Select 'Properties'
- On the 'General' tab, scroll down to 'Steam Cloud'
- Disable 'Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide'
[Microsoft Store] Delete Darktide AppData & Verify

- In 'My Library', select 'Darktide'
- Select 'More Options (...)'
- Select 'Manage'
- Select 'Files'
- Select 'Verify and Repair'
Connect to a Mobile Hotspot
If available, we recommend connecting your PC or console to a mobile hotspot, to see if the error persists whilst under another connection.
This can help in isolating the issue.
If the error no longer occurs after switching to a mobile hotspot, we recommend that you contact your ISP for assistance.
